Candle Care

Candle Care Tips

  • Trim the Wick: Before lighting a candle, always trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch (0.6 cm) in length. A longer wick can create a larger flame, causing excessive heat, uneven burning, and black soot. Trimming the wick before each use helps promote a steadier, cleaner, and safer burn.
  • First Burn Matters: During the first burn of a candle, allow it to create a full melt pool, meaning the liquid wax reaches the edges of the container. This process typically takes around 1-2 hours per inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. Allowing a full melt pool prevents tunneling, a condition where the wax doesn't melt evenly, leaving unused wax on the sides. A full melt pool also helps set the memory of the candle, ensuring a more even burn in subsequent uses.
  • Avoid Drafts: Candles are sensitive to air movement, so ensure they are placed in a draft-free area. Drafts can cause uneven burning, flickering flames, and a shorter lifespan. Avoid positioning candles near open windows, fans, or high-traffic areas where there is a constant breeze.
  • Monitor Burning Time: Never leave a burning candle unattended, especially if you're leaving the room or going to sleep. It's important to monitor the burning time and extinguish the candle before it burns all the way down. Generally, it's recommended not to burn a candle for more than four hours at a time to prevent overheating and maintain its quality.
  • Extinguish Safely: To extinguish a candle safely, use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame. Avoid using water or blowing forcefully, as this can cause hot wax to splatter. Extinguishing the flame correctly helps prevent accidents and keeps the surrounding area free from smoke.
  • Storage and Maintenance: When not in use, store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Exposure to sunlight can cause candles to fade or soften. Additionally, keep them covered to prevent dust accumulation. If the surface of the candle becomes dusty, wipe it gently with a soft cloth.
  • Repurpose or Recycle: Once a candle has burned completely, consider repurposing the container or recycling it. Clean out any remaining wax and wick debris, and you can use the container for storing small items or as a decorative element in your home. Many candle brands offer candle recycling programs, so check if they have specific instructions for recycling their containers.
